Afternoon Tea at the Sherbet Cafe & Bake Shop
With cravings for sugary delights and coffee, my friend and I set out to Maylands for a Sunday afternoon fix.
It is 3:15pm by the time we arrive at the Sherbet Cafe & Bake Shop in Maylands. With 45 minutes till closing time, we panic and power walk like Kel Knight and Kath Day-Knight, with hips swaying side-to-side.
The cafe is full to the brim with patrons inside, so we choose to sit outside at the only empty table, which is bathed in sunlight – not a bad draw of the card really. After skimming through the menu, I hop off to the counter to order our afternoon tea. I order one Vanilla – Espresso ($4.00) and Banana – Caramel ($4.00) each, a Spearmint Milkshake ($5.00) and a Cappuccino ($3.50). I am after the toasted banana & chocolate bread but it is sold out.

We share both cupcakes, starting off with the Vanilla – Espresso. The vanilla bean cake is light, fluffy, and moist enough to stick on our teeth, much like what leeches do when they suction cup themselves to a mongoose’s buttocks. The Madagascan vanilla beans used in the cake are inherently sweet and give off a rich, full aromatic scent. Rolling the cake around the tongue is absolute bliss. The Espresso frosting is delicate and crackles with each bite, but the taste of espresso is non-existent. All we can taste is sugar.

The Banana – Caramel cupcake is a better choice, with sweet banana hidden in the vanilla bean cake, and creamy, crackly caramel frosting on top. The caramel cube is chewy like gum.

My spearmint milkshake is bright green, cool, and refreshing. It washes away the caramel and espresso frostings lingering on my tongue, and replaces them with a light film of aromatic, sweet flavoured milk. Meanwhile the back of my throat begins to form stalactites and stalagmites of sugar, while my oesophagus is not so lucky as it tries to cope with all forms of sweet goodness. I reach for a glass of water to wash all sugary traces away.

Mmm…frothy goodness
My friend’s cappuccino is perfectly made, with the crema silky smooth, and with a light sheen. The temperature is just right, making the coffee go down well – no burning sensation experienced. I am so impressed by the look of the cappuccino that I order a coffee for myself – a long machiatto ($4.00). It is also made well, and has a strong dark colour, giving my teeth a nice colour of brown.

This was our Sunday afternoon. A happy, sugary, fantastic time, and we loved every bit of it.
