Blake’s Cafe
Waking up on a Saturday morning with pangs of hunger, I ventured with a friend to Blake’s Cafe in North Perth for brunch.
As you might have guessed, Riki is the owner and chef of the cafe, and this cute and trendy place is well-known for its North African and Middle Eastern food. We ordered a cappuccino, long macchiato and our breakfasts – Riki Blake’s breakfast, which was a Middle Eastern slant on the big breakfast, and Shakshuka, a spiced tomato dish with onion, pumpkin and fetta topped with a poached egg.

Our eyes lit up with glee as our breakfasts arrived. Three huge nicely toasted pieces of Turkish bread sitting atop nicely marinated boiled sausage, with two poached eggs delicately placed on top of a Middle-Eastern style potato cake. The dish was complemented with a well-placed pile of rocket, and a small tray of butter sat to the side of the potato cake. The serving was overly generous. I dove into the potato cake immediately. I was amazed by the flavours bouncing around in my mouth – soft crumbly potato with crunchy edges, with a slight tang and saltiness that just excited all the tastebuds.

Marinated boiled sausage – it’s actually tastier than it sounds
The bread was cooked just right and was light and fluffy. I poked my fork into a poached egg, and the volcanic ooze of yellowy goodness breathed fresh colour onto the plate. I dipped the sausage into the egg and it went well with a mouthful of the Turkish bread.

The Shakshuka on the other hand was aromatic and its spices brought on a strong beautiful flavour. The pumpkin and fetta sweetened the dish, which helped bring down the intensity of the spiced tomato combination. The eggs were poached perfectly, producing a fine yellow silky goo of delight.

All in all, the breakfast was good, but the coffee was a little disappointing – piping hot and bubbly crema. When we paid the bill at the counter, we had a look at the wide range of cakes in the display window. They all looked so tempting, but we’d save that for another trip.
