Coffee Hit List – December ‘09
I go to a lot of cafes and coffee shops but I sometimes find it difficult to write more than a couple of lines about one place in a blog post. So… below is a list of places that I have visited recently.
Unfortunately, you’ll notice that in this post, and all of my other food+coffee posts, they’re all inner suburbs places (at this stage) – that’ll change soon. Sorry about that!
Likt Espresso (now part of La Galette De France)
- Fiori, 5 Senses, Yahava, Crema, Jaspers, Toby’s Estate Coffee.
- Predominantly young staff. The baristas make a good coffee – perfect temperature, well-textured crema, with a nice caramel colour.
- The good: the espresso shots in the takeaway lattes and cappuccinos are strong – nice well-adjusted grind.
- The bad: how hard is it to shop and drink at the same time?
- Rating: 3.5/5
Address: Station Street Markets, 52 Station Street, Subiaco

Opening Hours:
Friday – Sunday (9:00am – 5:30pm)
Monday Public Holidays (9:00am – 5:30pm)
Mill Point Caffe Bookshop
- Fiori Coffee.
- Cafe is generally busy during the day, with the majority of people being mothers, Gen X and Baby Boomers. Occasionally there will be the odd uni or school student (from the nearby Wesley College).
- The coffee served is consistently inconsistent (either too hot, or just right) – depends on the barista making your coffee at the time.
- The good: open every day of the week; a large unique bookshop; great cafe food; quiet inside if you’d rather read a book.
- The bad: coffee making is inconsistent.
- Rating: 2.5/5
Address: 254 Mill Point Road, South Perth

Opening Hours:
Sunday – Saturday (8:30am – 5:30pm)
Velvet Espresso
- Five Senses Coffee.
- Now under new management. The cafe is always busy with the majority of people being the local CBD workers, or the occasional people like me who get time off during weekdays.
- Still love the cappuccino with the cherry chocolate sprinkles. The coffee is made well and always hits the spot.
- The good: consistently made coffee – silky smooth.
- The bad: the staff can sometimes be unfriendly.
- Rating: 3/5
Address: Shop 5, 172 St Georges Terrace (entrance on King Street), Perth

Opening Hours:
Monday to Friday (6:30am – 4:30pm)
Beaufort Street Merchant
- Five Senses Coffee.
- Great food – a nice cafe to go to for breakfast, lunch or dinner. The meatballs are a standout.
- Coffee is below average. I have been there three times, and on every occasion the coffee well exceeded the 70 degree temperature mark. Lacklustre foam and very watery.
- The good: it’s more about the food than the coffee.
- The bad: the coffee. At least you know the beans are nice.
- Rating: 1/5
