Coffee Tasting at Yahava KoffeeWorks

Yahava KoffeeWorks opened their newest store in the Swan Valley approximately 5 months ago. In fact, the “shed” as I like to call it is a roasting premisescafe, and shop. The staff conduct tasting sessions ad-hoc with customers, every day of the year (except Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Years Day, and Good Friday).

Our coffee tasting session was conducted by Rob who presented us with a menu of about 13 different types of Yahava blends. With so many to choose from, we asked for some recommendations. We tasted the KahavaRomeo No. 5, and Espresso blends. Each coffee was prepared in a Bodum plunger and then poured into teacups. The Kahava blend was strong, rich, and left a very bitter lingering aftertaste, while the Espresso was smooth and had a nice body. The Romeo No. 5 was our favourite, with flavours of sweet coffee cherry and a richness of red wine.

After our coffee tasting we ordered a few coffees at the cafe. We chose the Triple C blend which was described as follows: ”a specialty coffee blend with all three certifications. Contains Fairtrade from Mexico, an organic from PNG, and a Rainforest Alliance from Brazil. Will suit most palates.” The coffees were served on a tray and in distinct red cups. They had a great flavour but unfortunately the cups were too hot to hold – the coffees were boiling hot. We left them to cool down for a few minutes while we enjoyed the scenery outside.

A hot day...

A hot day…

Jake the manager/director of Yahava KoffeeWorks caught me on the way out and wanted to mention that he has been following the Bowl of Honey blog – I was very surprised! Jake knew his coffee and was passionate about coffee and the roasting process. It was interesting to find out that Yahava coffee is currently used at about fifty percent of cafes/businesses in the outer areas of WA such as Margaret River and Busselton.

After an interesting chat, we left the shed with four coffees down. We were now awake – it was a good start to the morning…
