Sayers
Sayers is a husband-and-wife owned cafe in Leederville and is one of Perth’s worst kept secrets today. You will always be hard-pressed to find a table if you don’t go earlier than 9:00 am on a Saturday. However, today, we were lucky to get the last table outside the back at about 11:00am. Fortunate, given that it was a great day to be outdoors.
Our table out in the sun…
We ordered the Turkish Bread Crostini, Herb & Feta Crusted Field Mushroom, Crushed Potato Cake, Bacon, Poached Egg & Spicy Red Pepper Relish, the Baked Raspberry Vinegar Mushrooms, Feta Crumble & Rocket Leaf on Rye Toast, a 1/2 Serve of Poached Egg on Extra Virgin Olive Oil Ciabatta, and Avocado & Fresh Tomato on Toasted Sourdough with Rocket Salad. In addition, we ordered a cappuccino and latte. The coffees were made with 5Senses beans, and because there was a smooth all-round body, I would have bet the 24/7 roast blend was used. I was disappointed that my cappuccino was too hot to sip, so I had to wait patiently for it to cool down a bit. The coffee was weak and I would have preferred a stronger coffee to start my day.

The dishes came out immaculately presented as if they were supposed to be on show to the whole world. The presentation was top notch – magazine quality stuff. The Crostini I had was like a little Turkish toast, which was slightly salty and crunchy on the edges, soft in the middle, with the olive oil giving it a fruity, semi-bitter aftertaste. The poached egg looked so plump that I couldn’t help but burst it at first sight. The yolk was extremely bright orange with a milky consistency. The red pepper relish was tangy, with an added bit of spice. Although it complemented the dish well, it wasn’t really needed. The potato cake was compacted tightly and consisted of rosemary, sage, and onion to give an extra added flavour. It was lightly pan fried on the outside. The inside melted in my mouth like butter. The mushroom was a little rubbery but it didn’t matter since there were so many flavours running around in my mouth.

The Baked Raspberry Vinegar Mushrooms, Feta Crumble & Rocket Leaf on Rye Toast dish was actually quite good. The salty-sweetness of the feta combined with the soft mushrooms were amazing. The raspberry vinegar was not overly sweet, but rather, a semi-tangy black concoction. It did not overwhelm the overall flavour of the dish. The rye bread on the other hand, was hard as a rock – disappointing.

The Avocado & Fresh Tomato on Toasted Sourdough with Rocket Salad was colourful and fresh and served on a bright green plate, almost blinding us in the bright sun. The tomatoes were evenly sliced, and large chunks of avocado were begging to be eaten. The fresh cheese gave the dish some character. The 1/2 Serve of Poached Egg on Ciabatta Bread was simple and light. The bread was used to soak up the drizzle of olive oil, and was gobbled up very quickly.

If all that food wasn’t enough, I ordered a Poached Pear & Polenta Cake to satisfy the stomach before we called our brunch quits. The poached pears on top were caramelised, juicy and bursting with sweetness. The polenta toned down the sweetness of the pears, giving the cake an overall nice balance. The cake was a joy to eat, but my eyes were too big for my stomach, and I got through about three-quarters of the way.
