Simon Johnson – It’s all about the Allpress

Simon Johnson is a leading purveyor of quality home-grown and internationally imported foods to the Australian public, with 8 retail stores nationwide. Simon Johnson sells the highest quality food ranging from delectable cheeses and premium oils such as walnut and truffle, to condiments such as quince paste, as well as their own pasta sauces bottled up ready-to-go. If you are a passionate foodie or simply enjoy cooking using the best of ingredients which are unavailable in your generic run-of-the-mill grocery stores, make a trip down to their store in Subiaco where the staff are friendly and take the time and effort to help you wherever they can.

The other day when I went in store, I was surprised to find out that Simon Johnson sells three blends of Allpress Espresso which is shipped from Sydney, fresh every week. I am a huge fan of Allpress coffee. I used to go to Rosebery in NSW to have breakfast and a doppio every Saturday. They roast their beans daily in a separate warehouse-like room at the back of the cafe. Windows separate the roasting room and cafe, and it is impressive to see the massive roasters for show in all their glory. Allpress normally use the Supremo blend in the cafe which has a bit of a wheaty smoky flavour to it. The staff at Simon Johnson served me a complimentary flat-white and boy was I satisfied. The three blends for sale are:

Supremo BlendMedium roast. Bright clear full-bodied & complex. A blend predominantly of Colombian with a combination of PNG and Guatemalan. An excellent espresso blend highlighted with smoky overtones.

Carmelo BlendMedium roast. This is our signature blend. Southern Italian in style, heavily liquored, full-bodied and powerful. Brazilian, Kenyan Peaberry and Sumatran in origin. It has caramel aromas and a distinct and refreshing chocolate finish.

City Espresso BlendMedium to dark roast. Dark, rich and aromatic. Thick on the palette, with an exotic fruitiness and winey afteraste due to Ethiopian Harrar in the blend. Excellent for black coffee drinkers and transfers well for white coffee. Well rounded.

Allpress Espresso (www.allpressespresso.com.au, 17 Oct 09).

My friend purchased the Carmelo blend for his plunger and was very impressed. If you are into your plunger coffees or have an Aeropress like me, make sure you drop by Simon Johnson to purchase some quality coffee.
