West End Deli

Located away from the cafe strip and in the quiet streets of West Leederville is a gem of a cafe called West End Deli. The place looked as if it were previously a home given a little makeover and made to look like a cafe – what a great job they have done. As you step into the cafe, your eyes immediately focus on the display window of pork pies and a table of all sorts of delicious treats including lemon tarts and almond croissants. On the ground there are baskets filled with lemons and potatoes. The kitchen makes up about a quarter the size of the room, and chairs hang from the roof, which are accompanied by a West Perth train line map. Items such as these add “colour” to the place.

I went with a friend for lunch where we both ordered the pork hock & morcilla sausage, fried egg, parsley & white anchovy salad, not knowing what to expect. My friend ordered a hot chocolate, and for myself, a cappuccino. The hot chocolate was impressive as it was served in a wine glass with a large dollop of chocolate syrup nestling in at the bottom. The cappuccino was Fiori coffee, and helped wake me up a little bit.  Our meals looked so fresh and appealing on the eyes – the bright yellowness of the fried egg yolk contrasted well against the forest green parsley, and the white anchovies glistened on top as if they were just taken freshly out of water. The morcilla sausage & pork hock sat at the bottom of the plate, and was accompanied with a mustard seed spread.

Morcilla sausage is a pig’s blood sausage stuffed with rice, onion, and spices. It was was well-compacted into a cake with the pork hock. You would never have known it consisted of pig’s blood. It was nice and soft, and broke apart easily with the fork. The parsley leaves were crunchy and went well with the anchovies. The fried egg was not oily at all and the yolk was just perfect.

West End Deli’s menu is seasonal and you can expect variations to their dishes. On the way out I picked up two pork pies to take home. They were picked out of the display window and wrapped on individual trays accompanied by large pickles and mustard seed spread – I was expecting the two pies to be thrown into a paper bag and be done with – I was wrong. The pork pies were overly salty mainly due to the gravy poured into it. The pastry on the other hand was crispy and not too thick. I have been to West End Deli a few times now and I would definitely recommend their food for lunch.
