Bateman Chinese Malaysian Eating House

Bateman Chinese Malaysian Eating House can be found nested away from the busy Leach Highway and in the relatively quiet Parry Avenue. The restaurant’s diners are usually Murdoch locals who come here for the Fish Head Mee Hoon Soup – their speciality. My family and I come here regularly because we can’t get enough of the Fish Head Mee Hoon Soup and Sizzling Japanese Egg Tofu, and the fact that their food is just too damn tasty. This is my favourite Asian restaurant in Perth because it is easy to get a table, it’s casual, and good value.

As you would expect, we ordered the Fish Head Mee Hoon Soup (2 servings) and Sizzling Japanese Egg Tofu. In addition, we chose the Pineapple Fried Rice, and Pork Ribs Chinese Style. Now, you’d be thinking that fish head does not sound all too appetising. It’s just a name – no, really. Deep fried seasoned fish wings are served stacked on a plate along with a salty sour soup in a large bowl consisting of preserved cabbage, white noodles, and sliced tomato. The fish wings are crunchy on the outside and milky soft on the insideĀ  – taking bites out of these whilst spooning hot steaming noodle soup into your mouth is absolute bliss (note: maybe that description came out as plain weird but it truly is fantastic). The slight sourness of the soup went well with the oily saltiness of the fish.

The Sizzling Japanese Egg Tofu came out sizzling on a hot plate – small hockey puck sized medallions with minced meat and onions covered in a sweet gravy sauce. Biting into the tofu was like putting your teeth into soft creme caramel. The pork ribs were to die for – they were covered in sweet and sour sauce, and were virtually boneless, and very tender on the inside. The pineapple fried rice was slightly crunchy (which was great), and went well with the pork ribs and tofu.

At the end of the night the bill added up to $61 for 5 dishes between 4 people. What a bargain. We left the restaurant with our bellies full and our smiles large. Next time we’ll have the Assam Curry Fish Head – sour and salty curry with fish wings. We could have had it tonight but that would have meant 13 pieces of fish wings for us to devour. There’s always a next time.
