Ecco!
On the night of the Subi Street Festival, a small group of friends and I were fortunate to secure a table at Ecco! located on Rokeby Road. There was clearly a shortage of staff that night as two ladies juggled the duties of waitress, bill operator, and cleaner. We felt sorry for them but had imagined that any other night would have been a little less full on.
Not feeling very hungry, we selected just two pizzas between the four of us – the Ecco Special and Napoletana.
The Ecco Special was topped with tomato, mozzarella, chicken, ham, salsiccia, capsicum & fresh herbs. The pizza had a perfectly cooked crusty pizza base and was littered with small tender chunks of chicken breast and fresh shaved ham. The capsicum was cooked just right with little of the sogginess normally found in substandard pizzas. Despite the number of toppings, the pizza in fact tasted quite light and delicate – it was a play on the eyes. A friend of mine remarked that she could have easily eaten another one – it was that good.

The Napoletana was a more colourful pizza, topped with tomato, mozzarella, olives, anchovies, fresh oregano & basil. Like the Ecco Special, it had a nice thin base which was light and crusty. The anchovies were very tasty but unbelievably salty – they must have been swimming in a salt lake because they packed a punch on the back of the tongue.

We were very happy with the pizzas and felt just right – not too empty and not too full. We were salivating for more but it was getting a bit late and we knew other revellers from the festival outside were waiting for some Ecco!
