Ten Ten Kitchen

Ten Ten Kitchen has been open for a long time – a very long time. Back in the day when I was a kid, I used to go with dad to eat their Hainanese Chicken Rice on a fortnightly basis. But because their standard of food had dropped quite considerably over the last few years, I’ve not eaten there for a while – perhaps only two or three times in the past 5 years? However just recently, Dad mentioned that there was a new chef, and he wanted to take me there to taste the “old” difference (i.e. how it used to be back in the day). So we did just that.

The restaurant looked exactly the same – how it was left a decade ago. No work had been done on the walls, the kitchen, or floors. Absolutely nothing! However, this did not faze the customers who rolled in, filling up the 100+ seat restaurant, and ready for a cheap lunch. We sat down and ordered two servings of Hainanese Chicken & Rice – one serving of sliced up chicken breast and one serving of sliced up chicken thigh. In addition, we asked for a Combination Seafood & Chicken Laksa to share.

Our lunch came out within minutes, perhaps because we were one of the first customers there. The boiled chicken was moist, soft, and not dry at all. The chilli dipping sauce added tang to the chicken and cut away a little bit of sweetness, and the rice was cooked well, with the right consistency of chicken stock. It was not overly gluggy. The soup came straight from the pot of chicken stock in the kitchen, and was fresh, with a garnish of spring onions.

The laksa came out in a large bowl filled with egg noodles, tofu, chicken, and fish balls. The laksa “soup” had a bright red colour and slightly thick consistency, and was very hot. Everything about the dish tasted fresh, and it really impressed us. Unfortunately, the serving was so big that we could not finish it. So we gave up half way.

Too much to eat...

Apart from the sticky tables and deteriorating walls all around us, the food was surprisingly good. It was tasty, fresh, and the servings were generous. It was a no frills, casual dining experience with a focus on the food. Normally places like this add MSG to the food to make it appear a lot tastier, but it felt like everything at Ten Ten Kitchen was cooked with natural and fresh ingredients – no enhancers. The chicken rice was $7 and the laksa cost $8.50. The bill ended up costing us $22.50 for three dishes, which was great value. I guess the regulars come here for the food, and not for the ambience. I think I might be one of those lunch regulars again.

Thanks very much for the write-up. Decided to go try it out after I came across your blog. Just got home – the chicken rice was great but looked different from your photos – the crockery especially (changed). Unfortunately, the chilli sauce was not up to par – compared to the quality of the chicken, the rice and the soup. It was a bit too tart and vinegary, and not very authentic, however the rest more than made up for it. The lady at the front/cashier – plump chinese woman with spectacles – was also very rude – but on the whole, it was worth travelling all the way to try it and definitely worth returning as the chicken rice is really good. The table next to ours was served a dish that smelled absolutely divine – I think it was Sambal Long Beans (on the take away menu I got, the name of the dish is Fried Runner Beans with Sambal). Will have to go back for that.

Thanks again – would never have discovered this place if not for your blog!

PS Forgot to say the price of the chicken rice is now $7.50 – but still great value! Especially compared to the ones in Northbridge.

Hi Kitty, thanks for your comments. The chilli sauce has always been something that’s just not quite right, but the rest is really great for what the price. Compare this to Chilliz and you’re getting a better overall meal.

Haha the place is a good venue to eat for lunch time.

Hello there again, thought I’d let you know I went back for more chicken rice lol and also to try the Sambal Beans. Ordered it with prawns instead of on its own – it was soooooooo good. I don’t think I have had a good sambal like that in Perth for a long time and it was very good quality too – freshness came through in the ingredients. It had a very authentic flavour and chilli hit – “got kick”!!! The balance between the chilli and belacan couldn’t be more perfect. And lots of free parking at the carpark out the back is also a good reason to go to this place. Thanks again for a really good recommendation!

Not heard of Chilliz but interested to compare it. Do you have the address? Or a post on it..? :)
