The burgers are better at Jus Burgers
It was mid afternoon and our stomachs were eating themselves. We wandered the city and in dire need of some food, but could not decide where to go – Tiger Tiger, some random Korean restaurant, or maybe Milk and Honey. No, no, and no. We said “stuff it”, and drove to Leederville for a couple of nice juicy burgers. Because it was 3:00pm we got a table pretty much immediately. If it was 6:00 or 7:00pm, good luck. You’d be waiting at least 30 minutes to 1 hour. This was my seventh visit to Jus Burgers and I knew what to expect.
On my first visit to Jus Burgers, I had a mediocre burger. On my second visit it was bloody outstanding. On my third visit it was outstanding again. On the fourth, it was spectacular. On the fifth,…ok I’ll stop. My first burger was made by a trainee so I wasn’t too impressed. My second burger was made by Justin Bell, owner of Jus. The difference in taste and quality between the first and second were miles apart. Now I thought, “hang on, is my burger only tasty because Justin prepared it?” Well, I found out on subsequent visits that it was not the case. I believe Justin’s staff has had more experience now and are now used to the way things work. Justin has trained them well, and the burgers are now oozing quality.
We ordered the Spanish Snag Burger ($14.00), Cheeseburger with added Mushroom ($13.00), three Pommy Burgers ($13.00), and Onion Rings ($4.00). The Cheeseburger was topped with a large grilled Portobello mushroom which was absolutely fantastic. My friend was expecting a cascade of button mushrooms laid atop the beef patty – he was wrong. The burger was juicy. So juicy in fact that juice from the patty was dribbling all over the plate. The blackness of the mushroom coloured the juice very nicely, and made it look a lot like balsamic vinegar.

The Spanish Snag was spicy and full of flavours. It was similar to the burger at Burger Bistro in Shafto Lane in the CBD. The Jus Burgers version included a beef patty as well as the snags, whereas the Burger Bistro version only had sausages. My friend blurted out (with a mouth full of meat) that this burger was the best he had ever had. And to quote: “it’s like an orgasm in my mouth, and those orgasms are having orgasms…” We looked at him thinking, “just eat your damn burger…” His comment said it all. The burger was delicious.

The Pommy Burger is by far my favourite of all burgers at Jus. It just has that little bit of something the Cheeseburger doesn’t have – the bacon. The grilled, slightly crispy meat. The salty piggy. As with all the other burgers previously mentioned, the sourdough bread was crispy on the outside and soft underneath. The flour lined our lips as we took massive bites. My sourdough split in the middle as I took mouthfuls. It was like the Incredible Hulk bursting out of a shirt because of his enormous chest. And, the cheese was the pierce de resistance. Great burger and good value.

The onion rings, like Jus’ handcut chips, was freshly made. They were lightly crumbed, but a bit oily for my liking. The aioli was creamy like freshly dispersed soft serve. Overall, we were satisfied, and I was successful in convincing friends (who were first-timers) that there are good places in Perth like this. Jus Burgers is opening a second place in Subiaco on November 18. So there will be twice the Jus in lovely Perth.
