Greenhouse Perth

The Greenhouse is not hard to miss as you walk down St Georges Terrace – an environmentally friendly house of green already becoming popular with CBD workers and the like. Cafe Grendel, Tannic Teeth6050, and Six Thousand are some of the blogs that have written about this place, so rather than write about the intrinsics of the place, I’ll just get straight to the food :)

Our arrival at midday on a weekday did not guarantee us an immediate table – an hour’s wait was in store for us. We went away to do some shopping at the next door Enex 100 while we waited hungrily, and eagerly anticipating the much talked about food. An hour later we came back and were assigned a table to the left of the kitchen. We ordered the specials – a Pork and fennel sausage pizza with cherry tomatoes and basil ($12.00), and Braised lamb shoulder with pea, mint and pappardelle ($20.00).

My pappardelle was wonderfully fragrant and a delight on the eyes – large slow cooked lamb pieces off the bone (that were cooked over a length of 4 hours prior) mixed through the perfectly cooked pasta, with the mint and green peas adding sweet, warm, and fresh touches to the dish.

The pizza was freshly made with a milled flour pizza base, and handpicked organic cherry tomatoes and basil. It was doughy, soft and chewy, with the tomatoes and basil giving a nice sweet peppery taste. The sausage (which was also made on premises) had a nice balance of texture and flavour.

Still feeling a little bit hungry, we ordered and shared a Valronha chocolate cream, with cherries, and hazelnut biscuits ($10.00). It was a simple piece of art – a jam jar of chocolate cream topped with cherries, and a trio of hazelnut biscuits spread out on a wooden chopping board. We were really after the Watermelon jelly, berries, lemon granita, and lebne, but it had already sold out – the Greenhouse’s most popular dessert at lunch time. The chocolate was ever so milky and the biscuits smelt wonderful.

Before I finish, I do have to mention the toilets. I’ll speak for the men in this case – it was a different experience I must say. The toilet was different in that it was a combined tap, sink, and dunny. Pressing the button on the toilet not only caused it to flush, but also to turn on the tap so that you could wash your hands after you zipped up. At that moment in time I wondered if the “water” came from the same bowl that I so vigorously expelled my bodily fluids into. Anyways, the water was spurting out the tap so violently and for so long that I was afraid it would not stop. About a minute later it finally stopped. It gave me time to walk over to the other basin, throw some liquid soap into my hands and come back to the toilet to wash them. The soap was contained in a jar which was suspended in mid air off a long silver hook. It was a cool experience. And for the people among us who may need to do a number two at some stage, you’ll be happy to know that the Greenhouse has substituted toilet paper with fresh palm leaves – only kidding.

Overall we enjoyed our experience at the Greenhouse – fresh food, decent service, and different – just plain different. The  semi-circle shaped wooden seats, the watering can used to pour our water, and the use of jam jars and other household recyclables to serve our food in were unusual, but cool at the same time. Our main criticism of the place was that the food was pricey and the servings small - but I guess that’s not so uncommon in Perth nowadays. We would have liked to see more bang for our buck.

Regardless, the Greenhouse is an innovative and wonderful new addition to the Perth scene – a vibrant place that will win you over with the quality food if price is not a concern.

To clear up the toilet water question, the water from the tap is new water that is used to fill the cistern (tank above the toilet) to be used for the next flush. So no problems!

I also recommend having a drink at the rooftop bar. An oasis of calm (if it’s not too crowded) in the middle of the city.

I had some tasty sparkling wine and the “bits and pieces” plate (or called something similar) upstairs a couple of weeks ago, and really enjoyed it. I’m very curious to try their breakfast menu. Thanks for the review, I think I shall be returning! Will do my number twos at home though ;)

Thanks for clearing that up :) Chilling out on the rooftop bar sounds like a good idea to me!

There have been lots of talk about upstairs, so I’ll definitely be checking that out next time I’m in the city.
It’s worth experiencing the toilet facilities at least once :)

$5.50 for a miniature beer is very pricy. However, the feel and ambience at the rooftop bar is nice. And good staff, good service and a good concept goes a long way in Perth.
