Tart Pornography Courtesy of Francois

I don’t know about you but a good dose of food porn makes me all excited and tingly inside.

Francois Fine Swiss Pastries & Chocolates is one of those patisseries that I cannot avoid when in Leederville. It’s not hard to find when you’re looking for a parking spot near that little car park off Newcastle Street around the corner from Fibber McGee’s.

While I was there I picked up two tarts – a Pear and Almond Tart and a Plum Tart. They were just too gorgeous not to buy. It was as if I had picked those ‘two little doggies in the window’.

The Plum Tart had a custard base and was not a standard item on Francois’ tart menu – for good reason – many plums sacrificed their lives to become a part of this masterpiece. The plum slices were ripe, fleshy, and juicy – they had a great natural sweetness. The caramelisation helped enhance the flavour further. The texture of custard had a nice consistency. It was so good to roll the custard in and around the mouth with my tongue. I did this for a good few seconds, breaking up the custard until it became a sweet nothingness.

The Pear and Almond Tart was also a spectacular sight to see – golden almond flakes as thin as paper scattered on top of delectable mountains of sweet juicy pears and an almond paste base in a golden brown crust. It was a sexy looking thang. The insides of the tart were very soft – my knife cut through the tart with ease. It was not as tasty as the plum tart but very good nonetheless – the pear slices were overly soft for my liking.

All in all Francois’ tarts satisfied me and my friends very well – sweet glazed lips, dots of icing sugar on the upper lip, and a bloated feeling afterwards. Good times.

Ahh, the legalities of food porn…..love it.

They’ve been open for 10 years and Francois & Michele are still doing well. Give the mango mousse a try. It is light and has large chunks of juicy delicious mango.
Pearl of Highgate is a great place. Oh the smells – they’re wonderful. I wish there were more bakeries and patisseries in Perth. Bourke Street Bakery and Black Star Pastry in Sydney set the ultimate benchmark for great breads, pies, cakes, and pastries!

Oh goodness yummm! Your photos are fabulous…I’m almost tempted to lick the screen. It’s actually a recurring fantasy of mine to chomp my way through a tart without the assistanceof plates or cutlery. La Galette de France in Nedlands is another beautiful patisserie (they have a weekend store and creperie in the Subi markets though I would say the crepes themselves are sub-par).

    Nice work!

Yes, that plum tart _is_ just waiting to be eaten.. by me. I can’t believe you came between us, Devan. Some wingman you turned out to be.

Have noticed this place at night while walking past post-drinks, was unsure about the quality but now will endeavour to walk past sober during business hours.

Lori: Thanks Lori! La Galette de France is a great place and they do make an okay coffee. One of my friends lives across the road from the Nedlands patisserie. Every morning he wakes up to the smell of fresh baked goods!

Whenever I’ve come across a nice large cake or tart I’ve always had the urge to dunk my face into its sweet exterior. I could imagine my eyebrows creamy, the nostrils blocked, and traces of nuts in and around my teeth.

Conor: LOL….yes you’re right, I’m not a great wingman. But you will have another chance! Bring claws, goggles and tongue. There will be no holding back.

The place is bare as a dog’s balls at night time. During the day Francois and co. display their freshly baked cakes and tarts. They seem to go very quickly in the mornings. It’s best to ring and order if you’re after something. BTW their mango mousse is a delight! (Warning: contains large chunks of delicious mango).
